Unveiling the Treasures of Lent

Ashes

“Remember that dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return”

Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent, has its roots in ancient Jewish traditions of repentance and fasting, where ashes symbolized mourning and mortality. Early Christians adopted this practice, using ashes to mark penitents who began a period of public penance on the first day of Lent. By the 11th century, the practice extended to the entire congregation, signifying the universal need for repentance and reflection.

Lenten Collect (prayed at every service during Lent)

Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
