Embracing Peace this Advent Season

As we light the second candle of Advent, the theme of peace takes center stage. Rooted in the prophetic words of Isaiah 9:6, where Jesus is called the “Prince of Peace,” this Sunday invites us to reflect on the profound peace Christ offers—not just as the absence of conflict but as a multi-dimensional gift that transforms our lives and relationships.

What Does the Peace of Christ Mean?

The biblical concept of peace, or shalom, goes beyond tranquillity or harmony. It encompasses wholeness, completeness, and well-being across every dimension—physical, emotional, and spiritual. This shalom is a divine gift, calling us to reconcile with God, ourselves, and others.

  1. Inner Peace
In worship, we often hear the blessing, “May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds.” This peace is an unshakable calm rooted in a right relationship with God. It anchors us amidst life’s storms and assures us of His abiding presence.
  2. Peace with God
Through faith in Christ, we are reconciled to God, receiving forgiveness and belonging. This foundational peace renews our spirits, restoring the brokenness of sin and calling us into communion with Him.
  3. Peace with Others
Christ’s peace calls us to live harmoniously with others, fostering understanding, goodwill, and love. At St. Barnabas, this is lived out in our efforts to care for one another and the broader community through feeding ministries, clothing drives, and partnerships that address societal needs.

A Call to Action: Preparing the Way

Advent is not just a season of waiting; it’s a call to action. As John the Baptist preached repentance, we are invited to turn our hearts toward God, realigning our lives with His will. Repentance is more than remorse—it’s a transformative turning, a commitment to follow Christ’s way of peace.

This transformation isn’t limited to personal spirituality. At St. Barnabas, we embrace the broader vision of peace by engaging in community care and outreach. Whether through welcoming diverse individuals into our services or addressing pressing issues in our neighborhood, we strive to reflect the peace and hope of Christ to the world around us.

Lighting the Way Forward

In this season, the second candle of Advent reminds us of the peace Christ brought at His first coming, continues to bring through His presence in our lives, and will ultimately fulfill when He returns. It’s a peace that heals, reconciles, and inspires action.

This Advent, may we embrace this peace in our personal lives, our church community, and our world. As St. Paul wrote, “May your love overflow with knowledge and insight to help you determine what is best, so that you may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ.”
