Experiencing and Sharing Christ’s Light: Candlemas, the Purification of the Virgin Mary, and the Presentation of Jesus
Experience Christ’s Light and you will want to share it with others. February 2nd is a special day in the Anglican Church; it is a “lesser” feast day, falling between the great feasts of Christmas and Easter. The Light of Christ is front and centre in this multifaceted feast day. This lesser feast goes by various names: Candlemas, the Purification of the Virgin Mary, and the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Each focuses on experiencing and sharing Christ’s Light.
A Call to Action: Experience and Share Christ’s Light
Candlemas symbolically shines Christ’s light and then invites sharing that light in the world. In some churches this is symbolized by blessing all the candles that will be used over the coming year with prayers asking for protection from darkness and illumination of the heart.
The illumination of Christ’s pure light brings awareness to our need for purification. We approach God, as did the Virgin Mary, with a confidence borne of faith. Through the sacrifice of Christ and the refining fire of the Holy Spirit we are made pure and holy.
As we gather at the Lord’s table, we present ourselves and dedicate our lives to sharing Christ’s light.
