On this Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday, you might expect our scripture passages to have us count our many blessings, instead they portray moments of perceived scarcity. The prophet Joel (2:21-27) invites his listeners to attend to the signs that, because God is faithful, a long period of scarcity is coming to an end. Jesus encourages his listeners to put their priorities on God’s kingdom and to stop worrying about their perceived needs (Matthew 6:25-33). Those who respond to the messages of Joel and Jesus recognize God’s providence and give thanks.
